Building a Willow Tree Creche

Posted on

*** UPDATE ***

Due to several requests for detailed instructions on how to build the creche, we have an updated posted on how to build a Willow Tree Creche.  This post has dimensions, measurements, and a ton of good photos to help you build a creche like ours.

I know many of you are avid collectors of the Willow Tree nativity collection.  Well since my mom gave Bree a starter set for her birthday, we decided that we would build a creche for it, seeing how purchasing one will cost in the neighborhood of $80.

So it took about $15 at Lowe’s (using some good coupons) in order to buy some poplar, a package of door shims, stain(Mediterranean Olive), and a nut.   I will say this, though, poplar is a hard wood and it was absolutely painful to try to cut through it with my worn down miter saw.  Another type of wood might be a better choice.   After a lot of noise made in our basement  and a lot of sawdust, here is the finished product.  The coolest thing about it (unlike the standard Willow Tree creche as far as I know) is that it collapses flat for easy storage.

Hi Leesa, thanks for the note! As you can see, we’re up to our ears in preparing for our bicycle tour, but we will do our very best to get some additional pictures and measurements up in the very near future. Thanks!

Thanks so much, they are getting married August 13th and we gave them the starter nativity set for Christmas this year. Would like to make the creche and give it as a shower gift. Any help you could give us would be very much appreciated! Have a great bike tour, hope to hear from you soon.

I love these little statues! The first time I saw them like two years ago I decided I wanted some in my house at some point.

Went to Lowes can’t find the Mediterranean Olive, what brand was it. Thanks in advance

It was Minwax Meditaerranean Olive, but after a quick glance on Lowes’ website as well as elsewhere on the web, it looks like it is no longer carried. My suggestion would be to get anything with a greenish-gray feel (at least that is what we did when we picked the stain out). Good luck with your project – we would love to see what you come up with!

Myrt – I went onto the Minwax website and found a colorchart . Mediterannean Olive looked most similar to the colors like “Botanical” or maybe even “Winter Moss”, though it is hard to say on a computer screen. Hope this helps!
