Winter Solstice

To celebrate the shortest day of the year and mostly to welcome in the now growing daylight hours, my family all humored us by coming over for a backyard bonfire. It too me a half hour just to shovel a walkway through the pile of snow out to our fireplace and another hour to get our terrible woodpile to light but a little gasoline did the trick.

During a time of year that I too often find to be marred with consumerism, over-indulgence, and cliches, it was refreshing to spend a night with loved ones in the crisp outdoor air, laughing, eating, and talking- no strings attached. It has been a crazy year for the seven of us and I’m thankful we’re still all here to gather, even in the dead of winter.
